I teach high school English in San Bernardino.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because I knew I wanted to become an English teacher.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

This program prepared me by exposing me to stories from authors of various backgrounds (specifically in Christina Accomondo’s classes). This allowed me to see that it is important to teach more than what’s in the English canon. As a POC, this was empowering because I had only been taught stories and perspectives from people who are not POC.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

What I most enjoyed about the program were the relationships I built with my professors. Professor Hobbel, professor Stacy and professor Accomondo became my mentors. They advocated for me while I learned to advocate for myself.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

The English program at Humboldt State is amazing and it will prepare you to be the best English teacher at your future job.
