Jack Thompson Hearst Scholarship
The English department is proud to offer $1,000 scholarships to 2-4 students every academic year. To be eligible, students must be either a declared English major or an enrolled graduate student in the M.A. in English program, have a GPA of 2.5 or above, demonstrate financial need (based on FAFSA application), be enrolled full-time in the upcoming academic year (at least 12 units for undergraduates and at least 8 units for graduate students), and have at least one full-time semester of coursework left to complete in the major or the M.A. program. Students who are new to Cal Poly Humboldt, including first-year students and incoming transfer students, are eligible.
You need to apply between November 15 and January 31. You'll be asked to write a 250- to 300-word essay about how you will use your degree in English. Anti-racist projects and/or goals will be prioritized in the selection process. Scholarship funds apply in the academic year following the application.

Travel Funding
The English department Travel Funding Awards are available for English majors and graduate students. Each award can cover up to $250 for student travel. There are three undergraduate and three graduate awards offered each academic year. Each student is eligible for one award per year, and applicants who are listed on the conference program will be given priority.
Students have traveled to the following conferences, often working in collaboration with faculty to offer presentations and workshops in professional settings.
A few examples are:
- Association of Writers & Writing Programs
- Association for the Study of Literature and Environment
- Modern Language Association
- Teachers for Social Justice
- Conference on College Composition and Communication
The priority deadline is November 1 no matter when the travel takes place in a given academic year (academic year is July 1 through June 30). If funds remain available after the priority deadline disbursement, students can also apply for funding by April 1.
