Humboldt State has a strong sense of community, and the many donors who help support our efforts are an important part of that community.
Support Students & Programs
The Department of English is dedicated to providing students with a rich and well-rounded education in language, literature, and learning. Donors play a powerful role in ensuring that students continue to thrive.
There are three key areas in which donors can offer critical support for English programs and students:
- Scholarships: Contributions to the Jack Thompson Hearst scholarship help support students with financial resources to pursue their dreams, based on demonstrated financial need or a combination of other criteria. The Hearst scholarship awards several undergraduate or graduate students each academic year with a $1,000 scholarship.
- Toyon Literary Magazine: Contributions to the Toyon fund provide financial support for students engaged in creative writing and publication. Toyon is a student-run multilingual journal of literature and art and donor support helps to further the magazine's ability to train students with skills in editing, production, design, and promotions. Additionally, contributions help support a variety of creative writing and arts awards such as poetry, spoken word, translation and more. - Visiting Writers Series: Donations to the English department fund support a valuable experience for students through their exposure to authors from around the world. Every semester a renowned author is invited to campus to give a public reading and offer workshops for English majors. The program exists to broaden students’ understanding of literature as a form of cultural production through their interactions with the authors. Read more about the Visiting Writers Series.
With support in these key areas, our students will have the experiences they need to learn, grow, and create a more equitable society.
